Home › About Roorkee > Educational and Research Center Educational and Research CenterThe Institute which began as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in1847, became the University of Roorkee in 1949 and has been declared as the 7th Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. The college came into existence because of a pressing need for civil engineers to build the "Ganga Canal", which would provide irrigation facilities to the entire North West provinces.
The institute has had illustrious people associated with it both as faculty members as well as our alumni. Our alumni boasts of Victoria Cross awardees, Knighted people, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awardees. From Mekong valley in Thailand, to Lar dam in Iran, to Bhakra Nangal dam in India itself, the community of IIT Roorkee has made significant contributions. The institute boasts of the largest number of academic departments (19) and research centers (27) among all technical institutions in India. We were the first to start postgraduates programmes in engineering and have the largest number of specializations and super specializations at Master's level (53).We also offer full fledged specialized postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes in Earthquake Engineering, Water Resource Engineering and Management, Earth Sciences, Hydrology, Alternate Hydro Energy and Pulp & paper technology. National Institute of Hydrology: The Institute was established in 1978 as a research organization at Roorkee, India. Since inception, the Institute has carried out research studies covering almost all areas of hydrology, and has established contacts with national and international organizations of repute. The Institute is now well equipped to carry out computer, laboratory & field oriented studies with a team of 80 well qualified & trained scientists with excellent academic background and well equipped laboratories and facilities. The Institute has its Headquarters at Roorkee (Uttaranchal), four regional centers at Belgaum, Jammu, Kakinada and Sagar and two centres at Guwahati and Patna. Central Building Research Institute: The Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, India, has been vested with the responsibility of generating, cultivating and promoting building science and technology in the service of the country. Since it's inception in 1947, the Institute has been assisting the building construction and building material industries in finding timely, appropriate and economical solutions to the problems of materials, rural and urban housing, energy conservation, efficiency, fire hazards, structural and foundation problems and disaster mitigation. CBRI to work as world class knowledge base for providing solutions to almost all area of Building / Habitat planning and construction including building materials, construction technology, fire engineering and disaster mitigation construction. Irrigation Research Institute: Uttaranchal Irrigation Department is responsible to plan, construct and maintain Water Resources and Hydroelectric Projects in the state of Uttaranchal. Irrigation Research Institute (IRI) was established to carry out Research and Development work under the aegis of the U. P. Irrigation Department in the year 1928 as a small research unit in Luck now. Mr. Gerald Lacey, the profounder of famous regime theory was the first Research Officer. The success of this small unit was duly acknowledged and in 1945 activities were expanded. The expanded unit was shifted to Bahadrabad (Roorkee) in 1946, where abundance of experimental facilities were available. The research unit at Roorkee rose to a full fledged Institute in 1954. The Institute gradually developed into a pioneer research station and is now engaged in Research and Development activities for almost all multipurpose river valley projects in Northern India. College of Engineering , Roorkee: The college presently runs five bachelor's degree programmes (B Tech) for the 10+2 level aspirants and one Master's degree program (MCA) for bachelor degree holders. The curriculums for all progammes are in strict conformation with the guidelines of UP Technical University, Luck now. These include lectures, tutorials, practical, seminars and projects, in addition to practical training and educational tours. Patanjali Yoga Peeth: Swami Ramdev's dream of launching worlds biggest yoga project came true when Patanjali Yoga Peeth was inaugurated at Bahadrabad (Roorkee) at Hardwar - New Delhi highway. has been setup more than 100 acres of land. Patanjali Yoga Peeth besides conducting research in yoga and Ayurveda in the light of modern science, the with facilities for 5000 outdoor patients and 3000 indoor patients beds for indoor patients, is worlds greatest center of treatment with indigenous system. Institute of Management Studies, Roorkee: Institute of Management Studies, Roorkee was established in 1996 with the aim of creating and developing a new generation of outstanding sincere, diligent and ethical managers with a global perspective and an adaptive mode of functioning. It is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI, 1860. The campus is located at a distance of 4km from Roorkee, on the Delhi highway. This institute is affiliated to H. N. B.
